Reed diffusers: how they work and what to specify

A reed diffuser has three parts: a bottle, a fragrance liquid and a set of reeds or fibre sticks. The liquid climbs the reeds and evaporates from their surface, so the scent fills a room with no flame or power. The performance depends on the liquid, the reeds and the neck of the bottle working together, which is what a brief has to settle.

How it works

The reeds are full of fine channels. The liquid rises through them, much like water in a plant stem, and evaporates from the part that sits in the air. More reeds or a wider neck give a stronger scent and a shorter life. Turning the reeds over refreshes the scent, because the dry upper end goes into the liquid.

The three parts

The liquid. Fragrance oil diluted in a carrier. The carrier sets how fast the liquid climbs and evaporates. Carriers have changed over the years as safety and environmental rules in Europe and the US tightened, so the liquid must suit the market you sell into, not only the scent.

The reeds. Natural rattan is the classic. Fibre sticks are more even and come in colours. Reed length and count are set together with the bottle size.

The bottle. Glass with a narrow neck, so the liquid evaporates mainly through the reeds and not from the open surface. A ceramic or coloured bottle hides the falling liquid level, which some brands prefer.

What to settle in a brief

  • Size. 100ml to 200ml is the common retail range. We make reed diffusers in several sizes, including 100ml and 120ml.
  • Oil level. It decides strength and cost. About 10 percent is a normal starting point for a room.
  • Reeds. Material, colour, length and count.
  • How long it should last. Ask for a test in a room at normal temperature, not a promise.
  • Pack. Reeds are usually packed apart from the bottle, with a sealed cap for shipping.
  • Labels. Home fragrance carries its own hazard and safety labelling, which differs from cosmetics. We check it for your market.

A matched home range

A reed diffuser rarely sells alone. A home range can carry one scent across a reed diffuser, a small hanging diffuser for cars and wardrobes, a room spray and an eau de parfum. For a retailer that is one scent story, one artwork direction and several price points in one decision.

Questions buyers ask

How much fragrance oil goes into a reed diffuser?

Our 120ml catalogue reed diffuser carries about 10 percent fragrance oil. Small closed spaces need more; our 9ml hanging diffuser carries about 20 percent. Your brief sets the level.

Rattan or fibre reeds?

Both work. Rattan looks natural and is the classic choice. Fibre sticks give a more even flow and suit lighter liquids. We test the reeds with your liquid before bulk.

Can one scent run across a diffuser, a room spray and a perfume?

Yes. A home range can carry one scent across an eau de parfum, a reed diffuser, a hanging diffuser and a room spray, so a retailer gets one story at several price points.
