Buyer guide

Perfume production timeline, from order to your warehouse

In an existing bottle, a perfume order usually reaches a US or European warehouse two to three months after the design is frozen: about a month for packaging, about ten days of filling and packing, and about a month at sea. A new bottle mould adds 35 to 40 days. Scent selection and sampling come before all of this.

Work back from the date

Retail fragrance has a fixed date: a store launch, a season, a promotion. Tell us the date the goods must be in your warehouse, and we plan backwards from it. That is more useful than a single lead time, because the long steps depend on your packaging.

The calendar after the design is frozen

Step Usual time What decides it
New bottle or cap mould (if any) 35 to 40 days from the signed 3D drawing The drawing being signed
Bulk packaging: bottles, pumps, caps, boxes About a month Decoration and the number of suppliers
Mixing and maceration Per formula The formula, or your specification
Filling, capping, labelling, packing About ten days Hand assembly, gift sets take longer
Inspection and loading A few days Your third-party inspection, if any
Sea freight to the US or Europe About a month Route and port

Before the design is frozen

Scent selection, the scent sample, packaging design and the full sample come first. How long they take depends mostly on how quickly decisions are made on your side. The samples guide explains what each one confirms.

Three things that move the date

Testing. Stability is tested with your packaging, and the length of the test is agreed per project. A longer shelf life needs a longer test. Accelerated testing is often explained as one month standing for about one year on the shelf; it is a rule of thumb for planning, not a promise.

Transit tests. Cartons are drop tested before bulk shipment. If a finish scratches, the structure changes and the test runs again. An order is not the end of development.

Air freight. Glass perfume is dense, so air freight, which is charged by weight, costs far more than the usual “eight to twelve times sea” rule; on our quotes it has come out at 15 to 20 times. Alcohol-based perfume is also a dangerous good, and in peak season it is the first cargo airlines drop. If your date is tight, ship a few hundred pieces by air to open the shelves and send the bulk by sea.

An alcohol-free option

If the plan depends on air freight or parcel delivery, an alcohol-free product such as our Body & Hair Mist is not a dangerous good, which removes most of the restrictions.

Questions buyers ask

Can you ship by air to save time?

Perfume with alcohol is a dangerous good (UN1266, class 3), so air freight is limited and costly. Glass perfume is dense, which makes air freight far more expensive than for most goods. A common answer is a small first batch by air and the bulk by sea.

How long does maceration take?

There is no fixed number of days. We set it per formula, unless your specification sets it. We tell you when we plan the calendar.

Does a longer shelf life need longer testing?

Yes. Stability testing is agreed per project. A longer shelf life claim needs a longer test, so plan for it early.

When should a Christmas range be designed?

For goods landing in the US or Europe before the season, freeze the design by early August at the latest.
